Is there light at the end of the tunnel?

Consumers searching for the best removal solution to their unwanted hairs face a seemingly endless and exhaustive search. Caught between the warring factions of the industry, with manufacturers and practitioners slinging insults and accusations, consumers have no way of determining who is telling the truth.

A consumer posts in the forum and writes "We can and will spend the next ten years dropping tens of thousands on the 'hairfree psychic network', or else there can be a definitive body to judge treatment procedures." Truer words were never written. The only people who have benefited from the ensuing confusion are the manufacturers of useless devices marketed by fraudulent claims. Consumers opt to buy the cheapest device with the most outrageous claims in order to keep losses to a minimum. Consumers have been subjected to endless debates over the FDA rulings and have no faith in the truthfulness of any of the claims made as a result.

Consumers, don't despair. This may be changing! It seems that one of the associations of professional electrologists is willing to step forward and help you. The Society of Clinical and Medical Electrologists has issued a statement (which can be viewed in its entirety at http://scmeweb.org/position.htm) containing the following paragraphs:

"SCME strives to be the world's leading professional electrology association. We will investigate all the merits of new technology for hair removal on behalf of professional electrologists. SCME believes that, as a profession, we should ultimately define ourselves by the service we perform rather than the equipment used to perform that service.

SCME will take the lead in bringing educational and business opportunities to our membership as laser and light-based hair removal, and other methods for the removal of unwanted hair, emerge as technologies useful in alleviating the symptoms of hirsutism and hypertrichosis."

Change does not occur overnight. This statement is fresh off the presses (dated March 1999) so we need to give them a little time to get acclimated to their new role but at least we know where we can go now to get some informed and expert advice. This step has not been an easy one for SCME because of strong industry opposition but they have chosen to serve the consumer first and themselves and the industry second.
