In the News - Advanced Hair Removal

Dr. Joseph O'Connell is pleased to announce that he has acquired the first Diode laser in Connecticut for hair removal. The LightSheer D Diode laser from Coherent, Inc. is the world's most advanced treatment for effective removal of unwanted hair. The procedure is approved by the FDA for both men and women and requires no anesthesia. Patients return to their full activities immediately afterwared.

In the past the usual treatments for unwanted hair included plucking, shaving, waxing or chemical depilatories. Electrolysis is popular and effective for long term hair removal but can be painful and slow as each hair must be treated individually. It can take months or even years of electrolysis for even small areas with risk of electrical shock, infection and scarring.

Previous generations of lasers for hair removal were less selective and less effective. Some hair removal laser have depended upon geld carbon particles or spary to avoid damage to the skin. The LightSheer Diode laser utilizes the patented "chill-tip" technology to protect the surrounding skin and direct the laser energy to the underlying hair root. No needles, gels or other chemicals are involved and treatment of an area such as the upper lip takes less than one minute.

The laser is used typically on the lip, chin and sideburns of women as well as the armpits, bikina area, and legs, although virtually any area can be treated. Men often request hair removal from their back, arms and shoulder area.

Dr. O'Connell is the Chief of Plastic Surgery at Bridgeport Hospital and has been certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. He has extensive experience in aesthetic surgery and also performs laser resurfacing of the skin. An innovator in plastic surgery, in 1998 Dr. O'Connell became the first plastic surgeon in Connecticut to integrate facial resurfacing with the pulsed Erbium laser into his practice and in 1997 he was the first plastic surgeon to perform ultrasonic liposuction. He can be reached at his office, 208 Post Road West, Westport.
